Make a shrink pot - Green Woodworking

Taking place at our private woodland site on the grounds of Gilbert White’s House, Selborne, Hampshire, we will be gathering around the campfire and hosting a 'Carve a Spatula' workshop, on Sunday 28th April, 10.00am - 4.00pm.

Originating from Scandinavia, a shrink pot is storage vessel, used to house dried goods or utensils, etc. Made by hollowing a fresh, greenwood log, and then fitting a dry, seasoned base. The pot is then left to dry for a period of time, and as the greenwood log dries, it shrinks around the base, to firmly secure it in place.

This full day, 6hr Shrink Pot workshop is designed for participants, 18yrs+ and will provide the opportunity to learn how to transform a log round into a shrink pot. Using simple hand tools, we will first hollow out a greenwood log round, before preparing and fitting a seasoned, hardwood base, creating a simple yet effective ‘pot’ to take home for the shrinking process to complete. The workshop will also cover suggestions for finishing and refining your shrink pot further, along with how to select and prepare appropriate species of wood for shrink pot making. Please note, that this workshop has a focused and structured delivery.

This is an adults workshop, for participants aged 18yrs+. We do also offer Green Woodworking sessions for children and families, and these can be found via. our workshops page.

The cost of this workshop is £75 per person, inclusive of all materials, tools and equipment. Hot drinks and cake/biscuits are also provided.

Due to the nature of the workshop and the tool use involved, this workshop has limited numbers (4 spaces available) - Participants in this workshop must be at least 18yrs old.

The workshop is delivered outdoors in our private woodland site. This workshop will be delivered in all weathers (tarps are used to provide shelter from any rain) except extremely strong winds (in line with our Terms and Conditions of Booking)
